Japan to Upgrade Clean Water Supply in Five Target Provinces in Cambodia

The Japanese government has pledged to continue to support the clean water supply sector in Cambodia, with the expectation to approve budgets for system upgrades in five target provinces by the end of this year or early 2022.

The promise was made in response to the request of the Minister of Industry HE Cham Prasidh during a meeting with the Ambassador of Japan last week.

According to HE Cham Prasidh, the five target provinces and cities include Pursat, Siem Reap, Svay Rieng, Kandal and Phnom Penh.

HE Cham Prasidh said Japan has helped Cambodia a lot with both the waste and clean water management sectors, but as cities are expanding, better and larger systems are still needed.

Japanese Ambassador Mikami Masahiro in response promised to approve the proposal by the end of this year or by early 2022.

Japan has provided a lot of support to Cambodia in this sector. For instance, in late 2019, the water supply expansion project in Pursat province was implemented under a US$22-million Japanese fund.

This does not count other large projects such as the Cheong Ek wastewater treatment system, and the four-phase flood prevention system in Phnom Penh, among others. (Read more)
