Kampong Cham Authorities Warn About Severe Legal Action Against Mangrove Forest Encroachment

The Kampong Cham Provincial Administration has ordered relevant officials to prevent any illegal encroachment on mangrove forest land and warned that severe legal action would be taken against the encroachers, according to a meeting of officials on 17 May.

The meeting focused on solving the encroachment case on a mangrove forest land plot in the Prek Dambok commune in Srey Santhor district.

During the meeting, Kampong Cham Governor HE Un Chanda said that the flooded forest land is a habitat for fish during spawning and a biodiversity area to be preserved. Therefore, all relevant officials must prevent any violations which burn, encroach and trade those lands in a timely manner.

So far, the Kampong Cham Provincial Administration has issued instructions and inspected regularly, but there are still some who have used any possible means to turn the area into private property.

“Thus, we will take even more serious action against this matter,” said HE Un Chanda.
