Koh Kong Authorities Greenlight Another Sand Mining Business in Kiri Sakor District

The Koh Kong provincial administration has granted a permit to KNPG Investment Co., Ltd to operate a sand mining business in Preaek Khsach commune in Kiri Sakor district. However, the firm must follow a set of guidelines, according to an official meeting on 13 May.

The meeting mainly discussed the social and environmental impact of the project. After the discussion, the team decided that the project will not have a severe impact on the region as its permit is the existing one transferred from SIBELCO (Cambodia) Company Limited.

However, the provincial administration has asked the company to follow six guidelines:

1. The company must study carefully the transport infrastructure, especially roads, to ensure that the project doesn’t disturb the transportation of the local people. Besides, the firm must also reduce dust and noise when transporting sand

2. The firm must have a proper waste management system to avoid pollution

3. The firm must address the impacts and compensate the local people if the project affects their properties or their livelihoods

4. If possible, the firm shall help improve the living standards of local people by recruiting local workers, doing charity, or developing infrastructure in the region

5. The firm shall take into account the environment, natural resources and biodiversity in and near the investment project site

6. The project must comply with the guidelines of the Ministry of Environment and other regulations from the relevant Ministries
