Koh Kong Provincial Hall: Unauthorised Land Transactions to be Voided

All land buying and selling transactions without the inspection and approval from the relevant authorities, particularly the land located in protected areas, community, and forest areas in Koh Kong province, are considered illegal and will be voided, according to an announcement by the Koh Kong Provincial Administration on 14 July 2020.

The statement is squarely aimed at stopping the illegal sale and purchase of lands in protected areas, which have occurred very frequently, especially in Botum Sakor, Koh Kong, Kirisakor, Thmar Bang district, and some other regions.

The announcement stated that the land transactions with just a thumbprint between the seller and the buyer without the presence, proper inspection, and measurement by the relevant officials are considered illegal and will be voided.

Anyone who buys or sells land on that basis will be punished following the legal procedure, according to the provincial authorities.

On the same day, the Thmar Bang District Administration of Koh Kong province also announced to the owners of land and related units in the Southern of Kror Vanh Mountain National Park, middle Kror Vanh Mountain National Park, Tatai Wildlife Sanctuary and Forest Cover Area 2002 to also register the draft name in the two weeks of 15-30 July 2020.

Regarding the illegal land matter, Cambodia Prime Ministry Samdech Hun Sen recently has also warned that for those corrupt officials who conspired to take state land and occupy people’s land will be punished heavily, and those titles which have been issued unlawfully will also be void. (Read more)

To date, Koh Kong province has 10 natural protected areas on a total area of more than 1 million hectares, including the South Cardamom National Park, the Cardamom Mountain National Park, the Central Wildlife Sanctuary, the Tatai Wildlife Conservation Area (Cardamom Mountains), Koh Kong National Park, Botum Sakor National Park, DangPeng Multi-use areas, Peam Krasoub Wildlife Sanctuary, Koh Kapi Ramsar Island, and Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary.
