Mondulkiri Province: A Hub of Mining Investment with 21 Active Licenses

Mondulkiri province is rapidly solidifying its status as a critical heavyweight in Cambodia’s national economy. In an official provincial update presented during a high-level meeting with Samdech Techo Hun Sen on July 7, 2026, Mondulkiri Governor Kong Kimny revealed that the province’s economic landscape is experiencing an aggressive transformation driven by heavy mining investments, high-yielding agriculture, and a booming eco-tourism market.

At the forefront of Mondulkiri’s industrial evolution is its extraordinarily rich mining sector, which currently hosts 18 licensed mining investment companies holding a combined total of 21 active exploration and extraction licenses. The crown jewel of these operations remains Renaissance Minerals (Cambodia), which has successfully processed and extracted over 18 tons of gold since commencing commercial gold refining operations in 2021. This steady, high-output mineral production has injected vital revenue into the national treasury and set a high benchmark for responsible, large-scale industrial mining within the Kingdom.

Geographically positioned in Cambodia’s rugged northeastern plateau, approximately 382 kilometers from the capital city of Phnom Penh, Mondulkiri is strategically optimizing its border infrastructure to facilitate international trade. The province maps out four key bilateral border checkpoints connecting to neighboring Vietnam, including the Lapakha Gate in Keo Seima District, the Dak Dam Gate in O’Raing District, and the Nam Lyr Gate in Pech Chreada District, which are all actively serving cross-border transit. The Chimeat Gate in Koh Nhek District remains non-operational for the time being but is earmarked for future developmental expansion.

Beyond its subterranean wealth, Mondulkiri’s highly fertile soil serves as an ideal canvas for large-scale agriculture and agro-industrial enterprises. The province boasts a massive agricultural production footprint of 123,685 hectares, which generated a collective yield of 524,357 tons of diverse crop outputs over the recent cycle. Rubber production stands as a major economic pillar, covering approximately 43,912 hectares, with 22,786 hectares actively being tapped to yield 29,304 tons of rubber latex. Cashew cultivation also marks a significant share of the local agricultural output, spanning roughly 11,165 hectares and contributing a total yield of 10,328 tons to the market.

As industrial and agricultural lines expand, local authorities are ensuring that Mondulkiri’s signature natural beauty remains a sustainable economic pillar. The province has mapped and curated 105 distinct tourist resorts and natural destinations, characterized by dramatic waterfalls, scenic mountain landscapes, and indigenous pine-wood grasslands. To accommodate the surging influx of local and international nature enthusiasts, a robust network of hotels, specialized eco-resorts, vacation holiday homes, motels, local guesthouses, and diverse dining establishments are expanding across the province, turning Mondulkiri into a well-rounded destination where heavy industry meets pristine wilderness.
