Phnom Penh Airport Accelerates Green Operations, Commissions Environmentally-Friendly Equipment

New systems supplying power and air conditioning to aircraft on ground replace fossil fuelled equipment and cut further CO2 emissions and noise pollution.

Following its strong stance to sustainable operations, Phnom Penh international airport – a member of the VINCI Airports network – has installed Fixed Electrical Ground Power (FEGP) units and Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) units to cater to aircraft at parking bays. The new systems, fixed under the passengers boarding bridges, allow the aircraft to directly get electricity and air conditioning from the airport facilities.

Previously, auxiliary power units (APU) have been the main source of power for idled airplanes. The switch to FEGP and PCA aims at substantially reducing the use of APUs, which are noisy jet-fuel mini reactors that emit CO2, and other local pollutants, curbing operational efficiency on the apron.

The commissioning of the new technologies demonstrates VINCI Airports’ strong commitment to fight climate change through its global environmental strategy, AirPact. Part of it was Cambodia’s 3 international airports being awarded last October of the Airport Carbon Accreditation – Level 2, the only voluntary global program for greenhouse gas emissions reductions at airports launched in 2009 on the initiative of the Airports Council International (ACI).
