Phnom Penh to Boast All-Electric Mass Transit System

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has vowed to use electricity to operate a mass public transport network in Phnom Penh as part of the carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector.

MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol made this remark at a panel discussion on “Electrification of Vehicles for a Green Future for Cambodia” held on Thursday 4 November.

HE Sun Chanthol said that the ministry is currently focusing on the feasibility study of three mass transportation systems in Phnom Penh such as AGT, monorail, and a subway.

“In the process of finalising the public transportation system in Phnom Penh, no matter which type we are choosing, we are going to use the electricity for that system,” he said.

Studies of two projects, the AGT and the monorail, have already been completed, he said, adding that the ministry is waiting for the completion of the subway project study before making a decision.
