PM: Cambodia needs to build a giant hospital with 10k beds to prevent Social Health risk

Prime Minister Hun Sen has urged the construction of a mega-hospital with more than 10,000 beds to strengthen Cambodia’s health system and prevent social health risks. Speaking at the National Institute of Business (NIB) on March 30, 2023, where he awarded certificates and diplomas to over 6,000 students, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for the hospital as a response to concerns raised by the UN partner system in Cambodia.

“The UN partner system in Cambodia has raised concerns about preparedness in the first two issues. 1). The public health risk and 2). The number of elderly people in Cambodia is increasing,” PM Hun Sen said, adding that the proposed hospital would address these concerns.

Currently, the hospital in Phnom Penh has only over 5,000 beds, which is not enough to cater to the country’s increasing healthcare needs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambodia was forced to borrow the hall of the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center to accommodate patients for treatment.

The call for the construction of a mega-hospital with 10,000 beds is a step towards strengthening Cambodia’s health system, improving healthcare outcomes, and preventing social health risks.

Up to this date, the multipurpose Techo Development Building of Calmette Hospital, which has completed over 98% of the construction work, is scheduled to open in May 2023, further augmenting the healthcare system in Cambodia. (Read more)
