PM Proposes Study on Agricultural Wholesale and Retail Markets to Boost Farmers’ Opportunities

In a move to enhance market access for farmers and provide a platform for selling their agricultural produce, Samdech Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, has suggested conducting a comprehensive study on the establishment of wholesale and retail markets for agricultural products across the capitals and provinces.

During the graduation ceremony of agricultural graduates held at the esteemed Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center on May 15, Samdech Hun Sen emphasized the significance of creating effective marketing mechanisms that support farmers in selling their crops promptly.

“We encourage the establishment of wholesale and retail markets for agricultural products. We already have such mechanisms in place in Phnom Penh, where farmers can sell their vegetables, and we have witnessed investors expressing interest in investing in the agricultural wholesale market,” stated the Prime Minister.

Recognizing the importance of competitive pricing for agricultural products, the government aims to foster an environment where low-cost agricultural and livestock production can thrive, enabling farmers to effectively compete with imported goods in the market.

Phnom Penh currently boasts the renowned Deum Kor Market, serving as a hub for both wholesale and retail trade in vegetables sourced from agricultural communities and farmers from various provinces. Moreover, there are ongoing construction efforts to establish an agricultural wholesale and retail market in the northern part of the capital city.

By studying the feasibility of establishing dedicated wholesale and retail markets for agricultural products, Cambodia aims to empower farmers and create opportunities that contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector. Such initiatives can lead to improved market conditions, increased income for farmers, and enhanced agricultural development nationwide.
