Siem Reap Authority Bans Parking & Street Vendors on Sidewalks of New 38 Roads

The Siem Reap Provincial Administration has issued a new order banning all parking and street vendors along the sidewalks of the 38 newly-constructed roads or otherwise face legal action, effective from 17 September onward.

The notice issued on 17 September stated that the ban was imposed after the administration witnessed a lot of people parking their vehicles, setting up booths, and operating businesses on the sidewalk of the under-construction roads.

“Currently, construction of the 38 roads has reached the stage of paving sidewalks and bicycle lanes. Therefore, parking and setting street vendors on those sidewalks can ruin the construction, road quality, and public order,” read the announcement.

“The provincial administration would like to request the cooperation of the public to stop those activities, or otherwise facing legal action,” the announcement added.

Construction on the 38-road renovations as of late August has been over 75% completed.

With a total length of 108km and estimated to consume a total budget of US$140 million, this project stretches across 12 districts of Siem Reap city and a part of Prasat Bakong and the 38 roads will be well-connected with other main road systems to ease traffic congestion and reduce accidents.

The government also decided to reallocate the remaining budget from Sihanoukville’s 34-road renovation project to upgrade the sidewalks along the Siem Reap River. Another separate US$9-million budget has also been reallocated to restore rainwater and sewage systems.
