Siem Reap to Provide Homeless with Shelter, Increased Access to Resources

The Siem Reap provincial administration plans to relocate all homeless people and beggars scattered around Siem Reap town to live in the Phnom Changkarn Roi area in Varin district, where the authorities will soon build decent housing with proper infrastructure and allowing for small scale agriculture.

Siem Reap Deputy Governor Nak Neron said during the site inspection on Thursday 29 July that the government will provide homeless decent shelters and prepare water systems for them to grow crops and sell them for a living.

“However, we do not give them land. They have to share the land with the community to grow vegetables and raise animals for a living,” said Mr Neron.

“They will eventually have a decent life there as the area will attract a lot of tourists after COVID-19. To date, the authorities are also preparing road infrastructure connecting from downtown to there as well, headed.

According to him, zoning the homeless and beggars is a step toward an effective urbanisation plan. This is in line with the government’s goal of developing Siem Reap into a smart city and international tourist destination. (Read more)
