Thailand Pitches “6 Countries, 1 Goal” Initiative to Boost ASEAN Tourism

Thailand has proposed a groundbreaking tourism initiative named “6 Countries, 1 Goal” to strengthen collaboration and tourism flow within the ASEAN region.

The proposal, aimed at creating seamless travel experiences across Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, was discussed during a meeting on 21 October 2024 between Mr Dusit Menapan, adviser to the Thai Foreign Minister, and HE Huot Hak, Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, as reported by Pattayamail on 22 October 2024.

The initiative outlines ambitious plans for regional integration, starting with a pilot program between Thailand and Cambodia before extending to the other participating countries. To facilitate tourism and ease travel procedures, Thailand suggested strategies such as implementing a mutual visa waiver and offering travelers the option of a visa on arrival in both nations, aiming to streamline immigration processes and foster a shared tourism identity across the region.

In response to the proposal, HE Huot Hak expressed cautious interest, requesting detailed documents and further information for Cambodia’s review before making a commitment.
