Cambodia to Plant 30k Palm Trees Along Vietnam Border, Following Nearly 20k Already Planted

The Ministry of Environment is set to plant an additional 30,000 palm seedlings along the Cambodia-Vietnam border after successfully planting nearly 20,000 trees. This strategic initiative aims to bolster Cambodia’s national identity while delivering economic and environmental benefits.

Minister of Environment, HE Dr Eang Sophalleth, confirmed that the trees would be distributed to local authorities and residents along a 120-kilometre stretch of the border in Tbong Khmum province. This next phase of planting is expected to commence in August, as reported by the National Radio of Cambodia on 6 September 2024.

The project is part of a broader “green sprout” concept aimed at promoting sustainable environmental practices across Cambodia. HE Dr Sophalleth highlighted the significance of the palm tree as a national symbol, saying it fosters an appreciation for natural resources and Cambodia’s cultural heritage. (Read more)

In addition to the Tbong Khmum initiative, Kampot provincial authorities announced plans to plant 4,500 palm trees along a 3-kilometre stretch of the Cambodia-Vietnam border in Koh Veng, Koh Chamkar village. This effort aims to create a lasting environmental and cultural legacy while educating the younger generation about the importance of preserving forests and palm trees. (Read more)

Further efforts are underway in Kampong Speu province, where local authorities plan to plant tens of thousands of palm trees along the Stung Prek Tnaot River and around various tourist resorts to enhance the natural beauty of the region and attract more visitors. (Read more)

The palm tree was officially declared a national symbol of Cambodia on 21 March 2005 and continues to play a central role in the country’s environmental and cultural strategies.
