United States Recognized as Leading Donor for Cambodia’s Mine Action and Humanitarian Efforts

Over $200 million in American aid over three decades has saved lives and restored land for communities across the Kingdom

The United States has reinforced its position as the largest international donor for demining activities in Cambodia, contributing more than $200 million over the past 30 years to support life-saving operations and land restoration. This significant partnership was highlighted on March 12, 2026, during a high-level dialogue between Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), and Ethan Rinks, Program Manager for the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement at the U.S. State Department.

Senior Minister Ly Thuch expressed the profound gratitude of the Royal Government and the people of Cambodia for the continuous support provided by the United States. He noted that American assistance has been pivotal in clearing landmines along border regions and providing vital support to war refugees. This long-standing cooperation forms a cornerstone of Cambodia’s national effort to eliminate the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war that have lingered for decades.

Beyond the technical aspect of mine clearance, the Senior Minister emphasized that the impact of U.S. contributions has been felt directly by local populations. The release of safe land for agriculture and settlement has transformed the lives of thousands, offering a foundation for economic recovery and stability. The meeting also served as an opportunity to review the progress made by the Cambodian government in collaboration with various international partners and development agencies in addressing the ongoing challenges of ordnance disposal and victim assistance.

The American delegation, led by Ethan Rinks, acknowledged the effective management of these resources and the commitment of the Cambodian authorities to achieving their humanitarian goals. As Cambodia continues its journey toward becoming a mine-free nation, the sustained support from the United States remains a vital component in ensuring that communities can thrive without the shadow of past conflicts.
