Transforming Conflict Zones Into Fertile Ground: How China and Cambodia Are Building a Safer Shared Future

In a resounding testament to international solidarity and humanitarian progress, the landscape of Cambodia is undergoing a historic transformation. On July 8, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin announced a major milestone on social media, detailing the profound impact of China’s sustained demining assistance. Since 2018, collaborative efforts have successfully cleared and repurposed approximately 190 square kilometers of land previously contaminated by deadly landmines and explosive remnants of war. This extensive cleanup has effectively returned vast swaths of fertile territory back to local communities, setting a gold standard for international developmental cooperation.

The announcement followed the high-profile closing ceremony of the Lancang-Mekong Landmine Clearance Cooperation Project. The event was led by Ambassador Wang Wenbin alongside Dr. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice-President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority. During the project, specialized teams discovered and safely destroyed 104,000 landmines and unexploded ordinances, providing life-changing safety to rural areas. This life-saving operation has directly benefited more than 1.4 million people, allowing families to live, work, and thrive without fear. Ambassador Wang reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to standing firmly behind Cambodia’s demining sector, pledging continuous support to help the Kingdom achieve its goal of becoming entirely mine-free as quickly as possible.

This modern success builds upon a remarkable multi-decade legacy of resilience. In a special address marking the 27th National Mine Awareness Day on February 23, 2026, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the nation’s profound long-term progress. Over a 33-year period spanning from 1992 to 2025, Cambodia successfully cleared an incredible 3,541 square kilometers of contaminated land for valuable community use and cultivation. The allocation of this reclaimed territory underscores its vital role in national development, with 78 percent dedicated to agriculture, 5 percent utilized for critical infrastructure development, and the remaining 17 percent repurposed for essential community projects, including the construction of residential homes, villages, schools, and local health centers.

The continuous synergy between Cambodia and its international partners highlights a shared vision of prosperity, peace, and sustainable development. By breathing new life into war-affected regions, these joint initiatives are not only saving lives but are actively driving the country’s economic future. (read more)
