Cambodia and China Seal Pact to Modernize Key Northern Trade Corridor

An expansive road upgrade connecting Kratie to the Lao border promises to transform regional logistics and fortify cross-border trade networks

The transport landscape in Cambodia’s northeastern region is poised for a major transformation following a newly finalized agreement between the Cambodian government and Chinese trade officials to modernize a critical stretch of National Road Number 7. Under this bilateral arrangement, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has partnered with China’s economic representatives to launch an extensive rehabilitation project targeting the northern section of this vital highway, stretching from Kratie province to the Trapeang Kriel international border checkpoint in Stung Treng province.

The formal implementation agreement was officially signed on May 19, 2026. The ceremony was conducted under the leadership of His Excellency Pal Chandara, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the designated Project Director, who attended as the high representative of Minister Peng Ponea. Signing alongside him was Ms. Zhong Jie, the Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Cambodia.

Spanning a total length of 96.63 kilometers, the infrastructure initiative focuses on substantially upgrading the road’s existing structure to handle growing traffic demands. The project will see the corridor fully repaved with premium Asphalt Concrete, a major upgrade from older treatments that were historically susceptible to seasonal flood damage in the Mekong basin. Additionally, the entire span will be comprehensively equipped with modern traffic safety installations to ensure secure, long-term operational standards for commuter transport and heavy freight alike.

Beyond simple pavement rehabilitation, this northern segment carries immense strategic weight as a central artery for Cambodia’s international trade. Part of the broader Asian Highway 11 network, National Road Number 7 serves as the primary overland link connecting the capital and southern ports to the Cambodia-Laos international border checkpoint at Trapeang Kriel and Nong Nok Khiene. Transport authorities expect the upgraded corridor to dramatically enhance domestic logistics, stimulate socioeconomic development across rural northeastern communities, and smooth out cross-border transit with neighboring Laos.

This cooperation underscores the ongoing commitment between Phnom Penh and Beijing to bolster regional connectivity through infrastructure investments. (read more)
