Cambodia and China Forge Alliance to Accelerate Automotive and New Energy Vehicle Industries

The Ministry of Labour and Chinese automaker BYD sign a landmark agreement to enhance vocational training and integrate green technology into the local workforce

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training of Cambodia and Chinese automaker BYD Cambodia Company Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance technical and vocational education and training across the kingdom, with a sharp focus on the automotive and New Energy Vehicle industries. The strategic partnership marks a significant step forward in preparing the Cambodian workforce for the rapidly evolving global shift toward sustainable and electric transportation.

The official signing ceremony took place on June 15, 2026, presided over by HE Heng Sour, the Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, and HE Wang Wenbin, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cambodia. This high-level endorsement underlines the deepening economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations, particularly in high-tech and industrial sectors.

The primary objective of the agreement is to build a high-quality technical and vocational training system that aligns with Cambodia’s national industrial development priorities. By introducing industry-driven training curricula, the collaboration aims to upgrade the skills and capabilities of the local workforce. This approach ensures that Cambodian laborers can meet the specific demands of modern manufacturers, thereby supporting the structural transformation and modernization of the national economy.

Beyond foundational mechanical training, the memorandum emphasizes the integration of digital, smart, and green technologies into the existing vocational education framework. The initiative will facilitate direct technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and institutional capacity building between Chinese experts and Cambodian educators. This comprehensive ecosystem is designed to cultivate a sustainable talent pool of engineers, technicians, and skilled professionals required to support the burgeoning New Energy Vehicle market within Cambodia.

Both Cambodian and Chinese authorities share the conviction that this joint venture will serve as a crucial catalyst for national productivity growth. By fostering economic diversification and elevating industrial standards, the partnership is expected to open up numerous decent employment opportunities for Cambodian youth, positioning the country as an emerging player in the regional green energy economy.

Recently, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training also witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement on technical and vocational education and training between three major institutions and the Guangxi Transportation Technical and Vocational College of the People’s Republic of China (GTVTC).
