Development cooperation between Cambodia and Australia reached a major milestone as official announcements on August 3, 2026, revealed that the Australian government has provided approximately $1.3 billion—equivalent to nearly AU$2 billion—in grant financing to Cambodia since 1992. The landmark assistance record was highlighted following a high-level meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance HE Aun Pornmoniroth and Dr. Anne Aly, Australia’s Minister for International Development, Small Business, and Multicultural Affairs. The bilateral meeting celebrated over three decades of continuous development aid dedicated to accelerating social and economic growth across the Kingdom.

During the discussion, HE Aun Pornmoniroth expressed deep appreciation for Australia’s unwavering support, which began during the national reconciliation process surrounding the 1991–1992 Paris Peace Agreements. Over the past 34 years, Australian grant funding has driven critical improvements across essential public sectors, including education, agriculture, social protection, physical infrastructure, landmine clearance, and healthcare services. These ongoing financial commitments have served as a key pillar for Cambodia’s post-conflict recovery and sustainable socio-economic development.

In response, Dr. Anne Aly commended the strong bilateral friendship and effective development partnership shared by both nations. She confirmed that Australia will continue to expand cooperation with the Royal Government of Cambodia, guided by the strategic framework of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040. Dr. Aly emphasized that future grant programs will focus on practical, high-impact projects that directly support national development priorities and enhance long-term economic resilience.

The meeting also focused on harmonizing bilateral assistance with Cambodia’s long-term national objectives. Both delegations agreed to align future development projects with the Royal Government’s strategic plan to achieve high-income country status under Cambodia Vision 2050. By improving project efficiency, promoting sustainable outcomes, and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, capacity building, and human resource development, both nations aim to build a strong economic foundation for future generations.
