Cambodian and Chinese Institutes Forge Alliance to Elevate New Energy Vehicle Vocational Skills

The technical and vocational education landscape in Cambodia is set for a futuristic upgrade following a landmark partnership between Cambodian and Chinese educational institutions designed to develop specialized skills in the rapidly expanding field of New Energy Vehicles (NEV). This collaborative initiative aligns with Cambodia’s strategic transition toward greener transportation alternatives and seeks to equip the local workforce with cutting-edge automotive capabilities.

The expansion of this educational alliance was officialized during a high-profile ceremony on May 25, 2026, overseen by HE Heng Sour, the Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training. The Minister witnessed the formal signing of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) cooperation agreement between three prominent bodies: the Guangxi Transport Vocational and Technical College (GTVTC) from China, the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC), and the Prasith Institute of Technology (PIT). The trilateral agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for technical training exchanges, human resource development, the formulation of shared academic curricula, and unified technical standards, while building tighter integration between vocational institutions and industrial enterprises.

During the signing event, Minister Heng Sour extended a warm welcome to Mr. Chen Xiangru, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Guangxi Transport Vocational and Technical College, and his accompanying delegation. The Minister highly commended the proud milestones achieved through the ongoing collaboration between the ministry and the Chinese college, noting that the long-standing, historic friendship between Cambodia and China has consistently yielded significant dividends for the Kingdom’s development, particularly in public infrastructure construction.

The Minister emphasized that the new training initiative is remarkably timely and directly addresses the practical, evolving demands of the domestic market. As the Royal Government of Cambodia actively accelerates the adoption and promotion of vehicles utilizing renewable energy, the increasing presence of these advanced automobiles on Cambodian roads creates an urgent need for proficient maintenance and repair professionals. To address this gap, the Minister urged all signatories to initiate the immediate implementation of the agreement, placing specific emphasis on upgrading the capacity of local educators by training a substantial cohort of teachers up to the Master’s degree level in New Energy Vehicle technology.

From the state’s economic perspective, Cambodia views technical and vocational training as an essential catalyst for boosting overall labor productivity, driving industrial diversification, raising manufacturing benchmarks, and opening up high-quality employment options for young citizens. To ensure these programs remain highly relevant, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training continues to strengthen the linkages between academia and the private sector through demand-driven training models and on-the-job apprenticeships.

Expressing his gratitude for the ministry’s sustained support and strategic guidance, Mr. Chen Xiangru noted that this milestone is an achievement his institution has eagerly anticipated. He highlighted that the college possesses a proven track record of nurturing Cambodian talent, having trained thirty-six Cambodian students since 2022, with twenty-six individuals currently pursuing advanced studies in New Energy Vehicle technology, drone-based aerial mapping, and smart construction engineering. Looking ahead, the partnership aims to foster deeper exchanges regarding efficient institutional management and resources, with long-term plans focusing on the establishment of a dedicated joint center for New Energy Vehicle development within Cambodia to secure sustainable progress for both nations.
