Cambodia and China Sign Agreement Funding 7 Transformative Mekong-Lancang Projects

A nearly $ 2 million fund injection will drive regional digitalization, healthcare, and rural development across the kingdom…

In a move that further solidifies the robust partnership between Cambodia and China, the two nations have officially signed an agreement for the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund 2026. This strategic financial agreement secures approximately $1,980,000 for Cambodia, earmarked directly for the implementation of seven socio-economic development projects.

The official signing ceremony took place on the morning of June 4, executed by HE Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Wang Wenbin, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cambodia. The newly allocated funds are intended to accelerate grassroots economic activities, elevate public infrastructure, and foster sustainable community initiatives.

The seven approved initiatives under this cooperation framework address diverse national priorities. These include a dedicated mushroom cultivation enterprise designed to reduce poverty among farming families in Kandal Province, as well as the second phase of an integrated initiative focusing on rural economic diversification and clean water distribution. Market competitiveness is also a key focus, with a project dedicated to expanding regional market access through packaging innovation across Mekong-Lancang member nations.

The remaining projects place an emphasis on public welfare, digital growth, and environmental resource management. A significant portion of the resources will fund a targeted hepatitis elimination program, alongside an innovative community tourism digitalization project specifically designed to prepare local destinations for incoming Chinese travelers. Furthermore, the fund will support green technology capacity building and digital transformation for engineers within the Mekong subregion, as well as a water data capacity enhancement and regional dialogue project spanning from China to Cambodia.

According to an official press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, these seven projects perfectly align with Cambodia’s primary national development objectives. By effectively deploying these resources, the initiative is set to significantly uplift rural development, public healthcare, local tourism, and digital readiness. (read more)
