US$17 million Steel Recycling Plant to Open in Kampong Speu

A steel-processing plant, which uses recycled steel and metal scraps to produce finished steel products, is soon set to open in Kampong Speu province to help contribute to domestic supply and reduce steel imports.

Located in Oudong district, the US$17 million project is to be an investment by Chinese firm Hong De Sheng (Cambodia) Steel Co., Ltd. The firm will use the metal scraps collected from semi-finished local and imported steel products to process finished steel.

Director-General of Mines at Ministry of Mines and Energy HE Yos Monirath said on Monday 21 September that there is licensed firm exploring steel mines in Preah Vihear province. However, none of them uses the extracted minerals to produce steel due to the limited amount available.

He added that there are also two plants at the moment using recycled metal scraps to make finished steel in Cambodia.

According to the company’s website, Hong De Seng (Cambodia) Steel Co Ltd was established in 2019. The plant is scheduled to start operations in 2020 with capacity of producing 500,000 tons.
