Charting a Transit Revolution: Siem Reap’s Light Rail Dream Gains Feasibility Study Momentum

The grand vision of introducing a modern light rail system to Siem Reap inches closer to reality as the project advances into the crucial phase of data collection and impact assessment. A consultative meeting held on 23 August 2023, between Siem Reap provincial authorities and China Metro, a Chinese infrastructure company, marked another milestone in the journey toward revolutionizing the city’s transit landscape.

Mr Sisao Ming, a distinguished Senior Engineer in Road Traffic, unveiled the two proposed routes for the light rail line connecting Siem Reap Angkor Thmey International Airport to the heart of Siem Reap. The comprehensive technical team is diligently gathering impact data for both options, one tracing the old road and the other navigating the new thoroughfare. Acknowledging the historical significance of the Angkor area, the Chinese company, China Metro, has invoked the collaboration of authorities and relevant institutions to ensure meticulous data collection, taking into account potential effects on archaeological sites and protected zones overseen by the Apsara Authority.

Addressing the challenges of the project, Mr Pin Prak, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap, emphasized the need for a precise route through the Angkor area. He outlined the necessity for a meticulously crafted plan, which, once provided by the company, would set in motion a coordinated effort involving various departments, units, and authorities. Such a synchronized endeavor ensures the project’s alignment with the region’s aspirations.

As the light rail project shapes Siem Reap’s future, it is emblematic of a wider transit transformation on the horizon. China Metro is not only investing in Siem Reap’s mobility but also plans to undertake two high-speed light rail projects in the capital city of Phnom Penh, reinforcing their commitment to Cambodia’s modernization.
