Revolutionizing Sanitation: Siem Reap Unveils State-of-the-Art Toilet Waste Treatment Plant

A momentous occasion unfolded as Cambodia proudly inaugurated its second cutting-edge toilet waste treatment plant in the serene city of Siem Reap. This groundbreaking project, valued at over US$1.8 million, marks a significant stride towards sustainable waste management and agricultural advancement.

Nestled in Kantrak village, Svay Dangkum commune, Siem Reap city, the meticulously planned treatment plant and organic fertilizer production project span an expansive area of 3.5 hectares. The construction commenced in May 2022 and culminated in its completion on 31st March 2023, signaling a new era in ecological progress.

Mr. Ung Kimleang, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province, emphasized the project’s multifaceted nature and its pivotal role in enhancing social welfare and raising living standards. At its core, the initiative aims to recycle sludge derived from human waste, ingeniously transforming it into nutrient-rich compost. By establishing a robust compost market chain, farmers are empowered to access affordable agricultural inputs, fostering sustainable productivity.

This visionary endeavor has come to fruition through the generous financial and technical support of esteemed organizations such as the Association of Local Authorities in Ile-de-France (AIMF), the Inter-Provincial Union for Sanitation in the Paris Region (SIAAP), and the Water Supply Agency (AESN). United under the banner of a public development partnership between Cambodia and France, these esteemed entities have united their expertise to pave the way for revolutionary waste management solutions.

The project has been executed in two distinct phases. The initial phase involved a comprehensive study project funded by the Odessen administration, boasting a budget of 80,000 euros. From 2020 to 2024, the project will receive an additional 900,000 euros loan from ASEN, 400,000 euros from AIMF, and 400,000 euros from SIAAP, totaling an impressive 1.7 million euros.

Notably, this groundbreaking facility is the second of its kind in Cambodia, following the successful completion of the inaugural toilet waste treatment plant worth over 1 million dollars, situated in Sangkat Pleung Cheh Roret, Khan Kambol, Phnom Penh. These pioneering initiatives stand as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to embracing innovative solutions that harmonize environmental preservation with agricultural prosperity. (Read more)
