Green Horizon 2050: Cambodia’s Ambitious Forest Cover Pledge and International Nursery Initiative

The Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of HE Eang Sophalleth, has unveiled plans to elevate the nation’s forest cover to an impressive 60% by the year 2050. The ambitious strategy includes the establishment of international-scale nursery stations across four provinces, as announced during a meeting with ministry leaders and civil servants on 22 January 2024.

The minister explained that these internationally recognised nursery stations will be strategically located in Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Siem Reap, and Tbong Khmum provinces. These facilities will complement existing nurseries organised by the Department of Environment, ensuring widespread distribution of saplings for home and community planting.

Highlighting the multifaceted benefits, the minister emphasised that these nursery stations will serve as hubs for biodiversity research, particularly contributing to the creation of green tourism destinations. The initiative aims to: (1) plant at least one million saplings locally and in protected area communities, (2) foster the growth of seedlings for home planting, and (3) maintain mature seedlings to enhance urban greenery.

In a holistic approach to sustainable development, the ministry also envisions the establishment of Khmer-style entertainment venues, tents, and solar-powered lighting. This initiative not only supports the national environmental agenda but also creates opportunities for local communities to engage in clean, affordable tourism services.
