30MW Solar Station in Banteay Meanchey to Supply Power in October

A 30-megawatt solar power station in Banteay Meanchey province is scheduled to generate power to the grid, contributing to demands of power consumption in the province which is currently attracting significant investments.

“Recently, a project called 30MW solar power is under construction.”, said Um Reatrey, the provincial governor of Banteay Meanchey on June 4.

Currently, power demand in the province is about 100 megawatts supplied from the grid, and the power output from solar power stations will contribute to the grid and to reduce energy imports from neighbouring -Thailand, he said.

“And by contract this October, the project will produce electricity to be sold to Electricité du Cambodge … for use in Banteay Meanchey province, out of this 100 MW we already have 30 MW.” Um Reatrey said.

Located in Banten Meanchey province’s Serey Sophon district, a 30-megawatt solar power station is invested by Ray Power Supply Co Ltd with a total investment of US$28.8 million. The project was approved by the Cabinet in July 2019.

Victor Jona, Director-general of Energy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, told Construction and Property Magazine on June 4 that based on the Royal Government’s power policy, our power production capacity is enough to supply the power consumption demand of the people and the investments.

“Indeed, Poipet city has a strong growth of investment and there are enough power supplies because we have a lot of energy sources…,” said Victor Jona.

Currently, Banteay Meanchey province has 23 service providers licensed throughout the province.

It is worth noting that the province now has 191,000 people living in 658 villages, of which only 13 villages still have not adequate electricity access. However, in the 13 (2% of the provinces) village, some households are in the process of constructing lighthouses and connecting to the national grid, and some other villages already have access to electricity.
