45% of Cambodia’s Total Energy Needed in Construction Sector

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has provided energy-saving recommendations for Cambodia, in particular for the construction sector, as this sector consumes at least 45% of the nation’s total energy mix.

Through strategies and regulations, UNDP has thus far supported Cambodia with the development of energy efficiency codes, a roadmap to low-carbon, and resilient policies for the construction sector.

Meanwhile, the newly suggested recommendations include:

– Design and construct buildings with more natural ventilation such as more windows to reduce heat in the building

– Design and construct buildings that allow natural light to enter

-Use high-quality paint to reduce heat absorption

-Utilise rooftop solar

– Control usage of AC with an automation system

– Increase awareness of the benefits related to energy efficiency.

According to UNDP, improving energy efficiency across the country will greatly benefit the economy through the expansion of renewable energy.

Besides this recommendation, the  National Energy Efficiency Policy 2022 will also be another force helping Cambodia reach the carbon neutrality goal in the future.

Based on that policy, Cambodia will need at least US$3 billion fund for energy efficiency measures to save u[ 12.50 terawatt hours (1TWh = 1Mwh) by 2030.

For long-term policy implementation to 2050, Cambodia will also another US$2 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. (Read more)
