ADB pledges $89 million for water supply and sanitation services and financial sector

Two agreements worth $89 million were signed on 03 October by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance to improve access to water supply and sanitation services in rural areas, and to enhance the country’s financial sector.

The agreements were signed by ADB Country Director for Cambodia Ms. Sunniya Durrani-Jamal and Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy and Finance H.E Aun Pornmoniroth as part of the Third Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Services Sector Development Program and the Inclusive Financial Sector Development Program (Sub-program 2).

The two programs support human resource development and Ms. Sunniya Durrani-Jamal said that “the two programs support all four priority areas of the Rectangular strategy IV, which are human resource development through the improvement of public health care and nutrition; economic diversification by promoting financial and banking sector development; private sector development and employment by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); and inclusive and sustainable development through the promotion of agricultural and rural development.”

In Cambodia’s rural areas, access to water supply and sanitation services remain limited according to the ADB. While 73% of individual households in rural area can access water, only 11% have a piped water supply while only 56% of rural residents have access to improved sanitation.
