China Pledges US$10m to Bolster Cambodia’s Counterfeit Product Defences

Cambodia and China are set to strengthen their collaboration in combating counterfeit goods. During a working meeting on 16 May 2024, the Suzhou Institute of Construction Science in China proposed a US$10 million investment to establish a state-of-the-art counterfeit product laboratory in Cambodia. This initiative, communicated by Mr. Jack Yang, Director General of the Institute, to HE Doeun Sovann, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior in Cambodia, signifies a significant step forward in the fight against counterfeit products.

The proposed project would be executed through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model within a public-private partnership agreement. China’s financial contribution would encompass the construction and equipping of the laboratory, along with training for Cambodian laboratory experts. This collaborative effort aligns with the Cambodian government’s recent focus on bolstering its defences against counterfeit products. Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet’s appointment of a new member to the Anti-Counterfeit Commission on 10 May 2024 underscores this commitment.

The establishment of a well-equipped counterfeit product laboratory would significantly enhance Cambodia’s capacity to identify and eradicate counterfeit goods. This initiative holds the promise of safeguarding public health and safety while fostering a more secure marketplace within Cambodia.
