Authorities Speeding up Phnom Penh Drainage System Rehabilitation Works to Prevent Flood in Rainy Season

Even with the recent surge in the COVID-19 community outbreak, the relevant government bodies are still actively working on the road constructions, canal dredging, and especially the drainage system rehabilitation works across Phnom Penh to prevent floods during the upcoming rainy season.

Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport Sam Piseth said yesterday that one of the ongoing main projects is the restoration of the Toul Pongro canal 1. To date, the dredging work on the project is approximately 90% complete.

The whole Toul Pong canal 1 restoration project includes installing a main 4,545-metre-long concrete pipe from Prey Pring Village to Borey Chip Mong, three rows of drainage pipes from Borey Chip Mong to Boeung Ha canal, and a 1220-metre-long drainage pipe along NR3 from Borey Green Vill to Toul Pongro Canal.

Mr Piseth added the Toul Pong canal will play a significant role in draining the floodwater from NR3 in Meanchey district to Choeung Ek Lake. Upon completion, this project will be able to reduce floods from excessive rainfall to a large extent.

Beside the Toul Pongro Canal 1 project, the Phnom Penh Municipality is also currently constructing and repairing seven bridges in Toul Pongro Village, Sangkat Choam Chao I in Por Sen Chey district.
