Bakheng Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 195k cubic meters per day inaugurated

The official inauguration of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 marks a significant milestone in enhancing the water supply capacity of Phnom Penh and Takhmao city in Kandal province. With a remarkable daily capacity of 195,000 cubic meters, the plant’s opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The addition of Phase 1 to the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant significantly augments the existing water production capacity of 640,000 cubic meters per day, empowering the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority to meet the growing water demands of the capital city and three communes in Takhmao.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Hun Sen highlighted the plant’s crucial role in fulfilling the increasing piped water requirements of households, high-rise buildings, enterprises, and factories. This momentous project serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving water infrastructure and ensuring access to clean and reliable water sources for the populace.

The construction of Phase 1 commenced in February 2021 and spans an expansive area of 15 hectares. Executed under the expert supervision of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority and consulting services from SAFEGE Consulting Engineers of France, the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 is the largest endeavor in Cambodia’s water infrastructure development.

The financing of this ambitious project involved significant contributions from international entities. The French Agency for Development (AFD) provided $85 million, the European Investment Bank (EIB) contributed $100 million, and the European Union (EU) generously granted $15 million for Phase 1.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 will be supported by an additional $100 million from AFD, complemented by an allocation budget of $80 million from the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority.

The total investment in the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant, encompassing both Phase 1 and 2, amounts to nearly $400 million. As this monumental project comes to fruition, it paves the way for improved water accessibility, fostering sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Phnom Penh and Kandal province.
