Bentley’s SACS Software Saves Millions for India’s Offshore Energy Sector

The Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has utilized Bentley’s SACS software to digitally assess 18 unmanned wellhead jacket platforms off India’s western coast, aiming at achieving energy independence through modernization.

These existing structures required modifications, such as adding clamp-on conductors, to enhance oil production. However, the platforms first had to be tested against much stricter modern design codes and increased hydrodynamic loads caused by marine growth.

By leveraging SACS, ONGC created a digital environment to model the structures and run complex simulations, including 100-year storm scenarios, to test their structural integrity.

Bentley’s SACS is a comprehensive offshore structural analysis and modeling technology used to assess the structural integrity and “fitness for purpose” of offshore platforms. It provides a digital environment that allows engineers to model existing jacket structures and perform detailed assessments, including design-level linear and non-linear ultimate strength analyses.

This software allowed the team to perform both linear and non-linear strength analyses, which helped them identify potential failure modes and test various strengthening measures. This digital approach proved incredibly efficient, saving the company between 30% and 40% in total analysis time.

Besides, by finding ways to safely modify existing structures rather than building new ones, ONGC saved an estimated $30 million to $40 million in costs per platform.

Furthermore, the precise assessments provided by SACS ensured the continued safety of personnel and the marine environment by reducing the risk of structural collapses or oil spills.

Ultimately, Bentley’s software enabled ONGC to maintain its “fitness for purpose” for these platforms, supporting the early supply of domestic oil to meet India’s energy needs
