Tbong Khmum Governor Courts Malaysian Giant for High-Stakes Renewable Energy Venture

HE Cheam Chansophorn, Governor of Tbong Khmum Province, spearheaded discussions with prominent Malaysian renewable energy powerhouse, Sunview Group Berhad, represented by its subsidiary Fabulous Sunview Sdn on 15 January 2024. The agenda focused on enticing the Malaysian giant to channel investments into transformative projects centred around renewable energy and poverty reduction within Tbong Khmum province.

The high-profile meeting, attended by distinguished figures such as His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalillail, Crown Prince of Perlis, HE Cheam Chansophorn, Governor of Tboung Khmum Province, and Dato’ Sohaimi Bin Shahadan, Director and Shareholder of Sirage Energy Sdn Bhd, and also President of ASEAN Chamber of Commerce & Industry, witnessed deliberations aimed at unlocking the immense potential of Tbong Khmum.

In response to the compelling pitch by provincial representatives highlighting Tbong Khmum’s untapped opportunities, the Malaysian delegation expressed a strong inclination to invest in the province. A consensus was reached to embark on a groundbreaking project involving the establishment of renewable power stations with a generation capacity ranging from 100 to 500 megawatts. The proposed investment hovers between an estimated US$100 million to US$500 million, signifying a colossal commitment to bolstering the province’s energy landscape, as confirmed by HE Chansophorn to Construction & Property News.

The governor shared optimistic insights on the outcome of the meeting, stating, “Secondly, the company have agreed to develop the project, but we are still in the process of acquiring formal agreement from the Ministry of Interior and the Royal Government to proceed with the project through legal means.”

The initiative leverages Malaysia’s engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) expertise in the realm of renewable energy. This ambitious undertaking not only addresses Cambodia’s growing energy demands but also signifies a monumental stride towards enhancing the nation’s clean energy infrastructure, according to sources within the Tbong Khmum Provincial Administration.

Expressing enthusiasm for this collaboration, HP Ong, Executive Director & CEO of Sunview Group Berhad, stated, “We are enthusiastic about this collaboration as it empowers us to expand our geographical reach beyond the local market. This synergy is poised to significantly fortify our position in the industry, marking a crucial milestone in our commitment to sustainable energy solutions.”

More than a mere business venture, this collaboration embodies a shared dedication to advancing sustainable living practices. Ong added, Sustainability is not solely the responsibility of the government; it requires a collective effort from each of us. As we navigate this path, I am sincerely optimistic that this collaboration will yield a meaningful outcome, contributing positively to the environment and the communities we serve.”

Notably, Sunview has an impressive track record, with its largest single-site project currently boasting a capacity of 100MW. Sunview Group, as an investment holding company with a strategic focus on sustainable ecosystems, is committed to diversifying into various clean energy sources beyond solar. The company, already operating 21 solar photovoltaic facilities in Malaysia, aims to replicate its success in Cambodia and promote sustainable energy practices globally.
