Cambodia Adopts 36 New National Standards to Boost Investment and Local Industry

In a significant move to attract investment and enhance local industrial capabilities, Cambodia’s National Standards Council has approved 36 new national standards following a comprehensive review of 41 proposals. Minister Hem Vandy announced the decision during the Council’s 29th meeting on 26 December 2024 at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

During the meeting, Minister Hem Vandy emphasized the importance of adopting international standards as national benchmarks. He noted that such measures are essential for attracting foreign investment, improving domestic industrial capacity, and promoting bilateral and multilateral trade. Furthermore, these standards aim to ensure consumer quality and safety in the marketplace.

In his address, the minister urged the Technical Committee to develop a robust action plan for implementing the newly approved Cambodian standards. A key focus will be on strengthening laboratory services across various sectors to ensure compliance with these standards.

He also highlighted the need for the National Standards Council’s Secretariat to explore the development of standards specifically for jewelry and precious stones. Once approved, the next steps will include informing international organizations like ISO and IEC, publishing the new standards in the national standards list, and facilitating their adoption by private sector entities and institutions.

The newly approved standards span multiple sectors, including construction, chemicals, cereals, fruits and vegetables, management systems, electrical and electronic products, rubber products, automobiles, cosmetics, wood products, and textiles.

This strategic initiative reflects Cambodia’s commitment to advancing its industrial framework, ensuring quality assurance, and fostering a competitive business environment.
