The traditional solidarity and economic synergy between Cambodia and Vietnam are poised for a significant upgrade as both nations set their sights on achieving a monumental $20 billion in bilateral trade volume. This ambitious target underscored the high-level diplomatic discussions held at the National Assembly Palace in Phnom Penh on the afternoon of May 13, 2026. The meeting brought together senior leaders from both sides to explore multi-faceted integration, reinforcing a strategic partnership that has long anchored regional stability.

Representing Samdech Moha Rathsaphibalthipadei Khuon Sudary, the President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, His Excellency Kittisethabundit Cheam Yeap, First Vice President of the National Assembly, hosted a high-level delegation from the Communist Party of Vietnam. The visiting delegation was led by His Excellency Trịnh Văn Quyết, a prominent member of the Political Bureau, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, and Chairman of the Central Commission for Information and Education of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The courtesy call served as an ideal platform to evaluate ongoing bilateral initiatives and map out a progressive economic roadmap.

During the exchange, the Cambodian leadership commended Vietnam for its robust macroeconomic performance and expressed full support for Hanoi’s ambitious 2045 vision to attain developed nation status. In return, the two sides discussed concrete measures to accelerate cross-border trade, identifying infrastructure development as a core catalyst for future growth. Central to this strategy is the rapid promotion of physical connectivity, particularly the highly anticipated Phnom Penh-Bavet-Ho Chi Minh Expressway project. Once operational, this vital transport corridor is expected to drastically lower logistics costs, boost regional tourism, and significantly enhance people-to-people exchanges.

In addition to trade and infrastructure, the discussions touched upon social cohesion and mutual investment security. His Excellency Trịnh Văn Quyết extended his sincere gratitude to the Cambodian government for its continuous support in facilitating the livelihoods of the Vietnamese community residing in the Kingdom. He also acknowledged Cambodia’s favorable business environment, which has allowed Vietnamese enterprises to invest and operate smoothly, contributing to local employment and development. The leaders concluded the session by reaffirming their commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and regular exchange visits, ensuring that the traditional ties of friendship remain vibrant for generations to come.
