Cambodia, Laos jointly studies two priority locations to open a new border crossing

Cambodia and Laos have announced plans to open a new border crossing that will connect Phu Vong district in Attapeu province of Laos to Vern Sai district of Ratanakkiri province in Cambodia. The two countries are currently studying two possible locations for the crossing, according to HE Nhem Sam Oeun, Governor of Ratanakkiri Province 4 April 2023.

The first location is at post 103 between Vern Sai district of Ratanakkiri province and Phu Vong district of Attapeu province, from Vern Sai district to post 103, about 30 meters long. The distance from Phu Vong district to post 103 is almost 20 km.  While the second is at post 145, which is close to Kantouy Neak Mum Bei area, about 20 km.

The second location is seen as more beneficial to tourism because it passes through the Virachey National Park area. Once a location has been chosen, the government plans to build two new national roads in 2028 with a total length of more than 200 Km by using the national budget to support the new border crossing. HE Nhem Sam Oeun stated, “If the border checkpoint is opened, the second location will not affect the environment as much as in Post 103, which is in the core area of environmental protection.” The opening of a new border crossing is expected to boost tourism and trade between the two countries.

The proposed border crossing is part of Cambodia’s efforts to increase tourism and investment in the region. The new national roads will connect Ratanakkiri province to Vern Sai district and Kantouy Neak area. This will provide easier access for tourists and investors to explore the region’s natural beauty and business opportunities. It will provide better connectivity and access to the area, helping to boost tourism and economic growth. The joint report on the two possible locations for the new border crossing is currently being prepared and will be submitted to the Royal Government for review and decision.
