Cambodia’s pristine coastlines and marine ecosystems are poised for a sustainable revolution, driving both environmental conservation and economic growth for local communities. In an official announcement released on July 13, 2026, the Asian Development Bank in Cambodia unveiled a major milestone for the nation’s blue economy: the implementation of the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries project. This monumental $73 million initiative is strategically designed to reverse the decline of marine resources, breathe new life into coastal environments, and significantly uplift the lives of those who depend on them. By targeting a 40% restoration of nearshore fisheries resources, the project is set to deliver direct, life-changing benefits to approximately 200,000 residents across Cambodia’s coastal communities.

The momentum of this flagship environmental venture was proudly on display during the official inauguration ceremony of the new Kep Provincial Fisheries Cantonment office. Presided over by HE Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the event brought together key stakeholders dedicated to maritime governance. Speaking at the ceremony, Yasmin Siddiqi, the Country Director of the Asian Development Bank in Cambodia, emphasized that the gathering represented far more than the completion of a new administrative building. She noted that the day celebrated a profound, collective commitment to sustainable fisheries management, the recovery of healthy marine ecosystems, and the long-term improvement of livelihoods for families living along Cambodia’s coast.

The state-of-the-art office is a vital investment in Cambodia’s public administration and institutional capacity. Equipped with modern facilities, the new center provides fisheries officers with a robust platform to strengthen their coordination, monitoring, and law enforcement capabilities. By optimizing these enforcement tools, the cantonment will deliver vastly improved public services to the local fishing communities in Kep and its surrounding regions, helping fishermen transition toward safer, more sustainable maritime practices.

This high-impact office is an integral part of the broader Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries project. The initiative stands as a shining example of successful international collaboration, receiving joint backing and funding from the Royal Government of Cambodia, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). By uniting domestic expertise with global financial and technical resources, the partnership establishes a durable framework for climate-resilient development and sustainable resource management across the region.
