Cambodian Government Announces Exciting Initiative to Beautify National Roads

To enhance the visual appeal of cities and towns across the country, the Cambodian government is launching a ground-breaking campaign called “National Road Free of Plastic Trash” starting 1 January 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, aims to revitalize major national roads—including Roads 3, 4, 41, and 51—by ensuring they are free from plastic waste.

The campaign is not just about cleanliness; it represents a significant step toward creating a more attractive and inviting environment for both residents and visitors. Clean roads and fresh air can significantly enhance the quality of life, making cities more appealing for investment and tourism. As part of this initiative, the ministry highlighted that a clean, well-maintained public space is crucial for attracting both local and international investors.

Engagement and collaboration will be key components of this campaign. The Ministry of Environment is calling on public and private stakeholders, including local governments, schools, and community members, to join forces in organizing clean-up activities along national roads. This collective effort will promote responsible waste management practices and provide a model for communities across Cambodia.

Moreover, the campaign will build on the momentum generated by previous initiatives. In 2024, efforts to reduce plastic usage saw an impressive 80% reduction in imported plastics, alongside a significant decrease in plastic litter across 11 provinces compared to the previous year. The government’s renewed commitment to lowering plastic waste is further evidenced by campaigns like “Today I Do Not Use Plastic Bags” and “Cambodia is Clean, Khmer Can Do,” which encourage citizens to adopt sustainable habits.

As Cambodia gears up for this ambitious cleaning initiative, the hope is that it will not only enhance the aesthetic quality of national roads but also foster a cleaner environment for all. The “National Road Free of Plastic Trash” campaign promises to pave the way for a cleaner, more vibrant future in which both residents and visitors can enjoy the natural beauty and hospitality that Cambodia has to offer.
