Gov’t Establishes Kampong Som Municipality by Reallocating Five Communes from Prey Nob District

The Cambodian government has announced the formation of Kampong Som Municipality in Sihanoukville province by reassigning five communes from Prey Nob district, including Ream, Bit Trang, O’Oknha Heng, Boeung Ta Prohm, and O’Chrov. This significant administrative change was formalised through a sub-decree issued on 28 August 2024.

Prime Minister Hun Manet declared that the newly formed Kampong Som Municipality will be headquartered in Ream Sangkat, with its administrative structure and management expected to align with existing laws and regulations.

The Prey Nob District Council and Prey Nob District Board of Governors will maintain their administrative roles over the five communes until the establishment of the Kampong Som Municipal Council and Kampong Som Municipality.

The sub-decree also mandates that relevant ministers and authorities are responsible for executing these changes in accordance with their respective duties from the date of signing.

This new development adds a third city to Sihanoukville province, which currently comprises two cities—Sihanoukville and Koh Rong—and three districts: Prey Nob, Kampong Seila, and Stung Hav. With the creation of Kampong Som Municipality, Sihanoukville is set to expand its urban landscape, enhancing its strategic importance and administrative structure.
