Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has disclosed that the nation is home to 1,562 irrigation reservoirs, yet only 197 of them—representing a mere 13%—are officially registered. This crucial detail was highlighted during a meeting held on 26 December 2024, where officials underscored the reservoirs’ vital role in supporting agriculture and managing water resources.

The meeting revealed that while 273 reservoirs are in the process of being registered, a significant 1,092 remain unregistered, comprising about 70% of the total. Notably, Phnom Penh and Pailin provinces lack any irrigation reservoirs, while the other 23 provinces collectively benefit from these essential water management systems. This disparity highlights the urgent need for improved registration and oversight to optimize water use for Cambodia’s growing agricultural sector.

The Minister of Water Resources reiterated the government’s commitment to expediting registration. Ensuring all reservoirs are accounted for and utilized effectively is seen as a critical step in bolstering the nation’s water management capabilities and enhancing food security. These efforts aim to equip the country to better meet the demands of its expanding population and agricultural production needs.
