Chinese Firm’s Studies on Mondulkiri Airport Project Disrupted Due to COVID-19

The study of the Mondulkiri Airport project by a Chinese company is behind schedule due to COVID-19.

State Secretary of Civil Aviation (SSCA)’s spokesman HE Sin Chansereyvutha said on Thursday 14 October that a team of Chinese companies could not visit and evaluate the site due to the required measures related to COVID-19.

“The study has been affected. Experts have not been able to travel to get in and out of the country, so it has affected the company’s study progress,” he said.

Power China International Group Ltd has in principle received the right from the Royal Government of Cambodia to study the airport project in Mondulkiri since December last year.

The company’s team has already inspected the location of the airport several times, while the study, in general, should be done within 2 years, he added.

Located in Sen Monorom commune in Oreang district, the airport will be built on an area of 300 to 600 hectares and is estimated to cost over US$60 to US$80 million.

Besides, the Cambodian government and the Chinese firm are also currently speeding up work on drafting a framework agreement for this airport project. (Read more)

The framework agreement is focused on the demands from both the firm and the government for the project.

After reaching the framework agreement, the firm will study further on the preliminary study results completed earlier this year.
