Demark to build US$34bn world’s first windfarm artificial island

Denmark, the nation that built the world’s first offshore wind farm, is planning for another global first – an energy island in the North Sea which could supply energy to 10 million homes.

According to World Economic Forum, this gigantic project will create a critical boost to the world’s offshore wind capacity.

The scheme will involve building an island 80 kilometres off the Danish coastline to be the transmission centre for 600 giant wind turbines surrounding it.

With an estimated construction cost of US$34 billion, this largest construction project in Danish history. The investmen= will be mostly from the Danish government with cooperation from the private.

The initial phase for the artificial island is around the size of 18 soccer pitches. Initially, the North Sea hub will be capable of producing 3 gigawatts of electricity, but the plan is to scale up to 10 gigawatts, which is nearly one-and-a-half times Denmark’s current needs. Large batteries on the island will store surplus electricity for use when demand is high.

Besides supplying other European countries, Demark plans to use the new offshore island to produce green hydrogen from seawater as well.

Such efforts are key given new climate-first commitments from countries around the world.
