Discussion on Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway Takes Another Step Forward

The Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol on Monday held an online meeting with Svay Rieng Governor Men Vibol and relevant officials to discuss the progress of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway.

The meeting aimed to resolve challenges that occurred during the process and speed up the procedure to meet the scheduled timeline, marking another step forward of this US$2-billion expressway.

According to the Svay Rieng Provincial Administration Facebook page, the meeting mainly discussed and compared the proposals raised by JICA and by China Railway International Group Co., Ltd. However, the administration did not reveal details on which proposal was chosen.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has been considering and comparing the master plans proposed by China and Japan since late 2020. (Read more)

In September 2020, China Railway International Group Co., Ltd unveiled three designs for the project. Likewise, JICA also came up with a plan. However, due to the high cost of construction, the government will continue to study further.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese also plan to construct an expressway from Ho Chi Minh City to Bavet. According to VN Express, the construction of this US$587-million route is scheduled to begin in 2023 and set for completion in 2025. (Read more)

If the expressway gets built on both sides of the border, the connectivity between the two countries will be hugely improved, resulting in better trade activities.
