Driving the Future: Cambodia and Japan Join Forces to Revolutionize Automotive Technical Training

The landscape of vocational education in Cambodia has reached a new milestone through a strategic alliance between the public sector and Japanese industrial excellence. On January 23, 2026, the Industrial Technical Institute (ITI) and Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to elevate technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the field of automotive mechanics. This agreement, presided over by Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour, establishes a Public-Private Partnership framework designed to ensure that Cambodian youth are equipped with skills that meet modern industrial standards.

The collaboration is particularly significant given the rapid expansion of Cambodia’s automotive sector, which has seen the establishment of multiple assembly plants across the country. Minister Heng Sour emphasized that this partnership will serve as a vital engine for human resource development, directly connecting classroom learning with the practical requirements of a global brand like Toyota. By integrating Japanese technical expertise into the ITI curriculum, the program aims to close the skill gap and provide students with a clear pathway to high-value employment in the automotive industry.

Under the terms of the MoU, Toyota Tsusho will provide technical guidance and potentially share modern equipment to enhance the training experience at ITI. This initiative follows the successful launch of Toyota’s own assembly plant in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, which has increased the local demand for qualified technicians capable of maintaining and repairing advanced vehicle systems. Chin Dara, Director of ITI, and Oknha Kong Nuon, Chairman of the Board of Toyota (Cambodia), both expressed their commitment to fostering a sustainable ecosystem where education evolves alongside technological progress.

This strategic move is expected to inspire more Japanese firms to invest in Cambodia’s human capital. As the government continues to prioritize industrial diversification, the synergy between ITI and Toyota sets a benchmark for how vocational schools can adapt to meet the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. For Cambodian students, this partnership offers more than just a certificate; it provides an opportunity to master the craft of automotive engineering under the guidance of one of the world’s most respected manufacturers, ensuring they remain competitive in a globalized workforce.
