Veal Veng District’s Eel Road Designated as Nature Reserve to Boost Tourism

PM Samdech Hun Manet of Cambodia has proposed a comprehensive study of the area surrounding the renowned “Hidden Bopha Road” or Eel Road in Phnom 1500, Veal Veng district, Pursat province, to designate it as a nature conservation area. This recommendation was made during the inauguration ceremony of the “Preah Botum Stupa in Wat Mony Ratanaream, Pursat Province” on 31 March 2024.

Samdech Hun Manet has tasked His Excellency Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, with leading a team to conduct a thorough assessment of this unique road. The Eel Road, distinctive for its eel-like twists and turns, spans approximately 10 kilometres when measured along its bends, although directly it is only 4 kilometres in length. Recognising its ecological significance, Samdech PM emphasised the need to preserve this area as a national treasure for the benefit of future generations.

Furthermore, Samdech PM proposed the clearance of existing developments along the Eel Road to establish nature reserves on both sides, catering to both local and international tourists seeking immersive nature experiences.

In a bid to promote sustainable eco-tourism, the government has also put forth measures to review small-scale tourism development projects. Projects failing to commence implementation within six months of licensing risk having their permits revoked. (Read more)
