Facebook to Build Us$1.4 Billion Data Centre in Singapore

According to a report by Channel NewsAsia (CNA), social media company Facebook is to construct an 11-storey data centre in Singapore with a capital investment of US$1.4 billion.

Located at Tanjong Kling, the data centre will feature a total area of 170,000 square metres and create hundreds of construction and many other types of jobs.

According to the same source, the first phase of construction is expected to finish by 2022 while more construction will continue beyond that.

Regarding the design of the building, Facebook will incorporate liquid cooling technology which can minimise the use of water and power. The company has already proved that the liquid cooling technology can reduce the amount of groundwater used by 20% in climates like Singapore.

In addition, in order to conserve the use of land, the new facility will be built upwards instead of outwards and it will also be equipped with perforated lightweight material that allows air flow.

Facebook had chosen Fortis Construction to act as its general contractor due to their joint experience in building efficient data centres.
