Government agrees new airport investment project in Koh Kong province

A new airport investment in Koh Kong province has been approved by the Royal Government of Cambodia, allowing investors to build an airport in Mondul Seima district.

According to an announcement from the Council of Ministers released on January 13, the government has approved the airport investment on between 400 and 600 hectares to be built in Pak Klong commune, Mondul Seima district in Koh Kong province.

The approval came at the request of the investment company for the new airport development project in Mondul Seima district.

Regarding the relocation, Sin Chansereyvutha, a spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said the new airport is a replacement for the former Koh Kong airport in Khemarak Phoumin city.

Mr Chansereyvutha said that that a joint venture between local firm Ly Yong Phat Group and Bangkok Airlines had asked the government for a relocation because the company found that the former location of Koh Kong airport was difficult to expand for commercial and industrial use and would face a high cost for social impact compensation.

“At the new location, the investment companies may want to have bigger land space than at the old airport location for not only for building the airport, but also building hubs of commercial and industries because investors want to link the transport with those hubs,” he said.

According to Mr Chansereyvutha, the company will begin the study on the master plan of the new airport after receiving approval from the government.

The two companies were granted in-principle permission to conduct the study on the development of former Koh Kong airport in Khemarak Phirum City in 2019 and the joint investment would cost US$40 million.

Located in the southwest of the country, Koh Kong province has another international airport which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2020.
