Government Permits Royal Group to Operate Southern Rail Line

The government, through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has permitted Royal Railway to continue operating the country’s southern rail line, according to a ministry announcement on 31 March 2019.

According to the announcement, the decision to allow Royal Railway to continue operating the line from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is because “the Ministry needs enough time to carefully study the legal and technical aspects involved in the management of railway operations”.

However, MPWT will prepare procedures to select qualified companies who have enough capacity to modernise the country’s northern and southern rail lines, for which Royal Railway may also apply.

At the 18th ‘Government-Private Sector Forum’ on 29 March 2019, the government announced the termination of the contract of Royal Railway for the railway operation, with the government immediately taking over the railway via the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, to manage before putting out for tender”.
