Gov’t Enforces New Guideline for Small-Scale Ecotourism Projects in Two Protected Zones

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) and related partners have announced the implementation of guidelines for small-scale ecotourism development projects with an area of fewer than 10 hectares in two protected zone—protected forests and biodiversity corridors.

MoE Secretary of State HE Rath Virak said on 3 October that the technical guidelines are necessary to effectively manage procedures, preparation, and implementation of ecotourism projects from infrastructure construction, land use, and inspection, to evaluation.

“This is to ensure that the natural resources are well protected and benefit from the project,” he added.

Ms. Salimata D. Follea, a Representative of the World Bank, said that the Sustainable Tourism Sustainability Project in Cambodia is aimed at improving the management of natural resources in Cambodia.

According to the MoE, ecotourism and cultural tourism have grown significantly and contributed more than 10% of the GDP annually.
