Gov’t to Request World Heritage Site Status for Tbaeng Mountain in Preah Vihear Province

The inter-ministerial body will soon propose to UNESCO to designate Tbaeng Mountain in Preah Vihear province as a World Heritage Site, according to Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra during an inspection on 29-31 January 29.

Mr Pheaktra said that after a detailed study, the Tbaeng Mountain historical site was selected among three other sites, including Prek Kampi, Prek Prasop and Thmat Bei.

“The reason why experts chose Tbaeng Mountain is because of historical, environmental, tourism factors,” said Mr Phreaktra.

“To date, the experts have already compiled some documents and will add more, to ensure that we have the appropriate documentation before submitting it to UNESCO,” he added.

Phnom Tbaeng or Tbaeng Mountain Natural Heritage Site was established on 13 September 2016. This area has beautiful scenery and is rich in biodiversity, covering an area of about 25,000 hectares.

The mountain is located on the borders of four districts including Sangkum Thmei, Kulen, Rovieng and Preah Vihear.
