Cambodia Attracts Over US$246m in New Investments in May, Half from China

In May 2024, Cambodia secured over US$246 million in new investment projects, with nearly 50% of the funds coming from China. The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved 24 new projects and one production expansion, which are expected to generate approximately 15,000 jobs for Cambodians. This information was released in a press statement by the CDC on 10 May 2024.

Of the 25 approved projects, 17 are located outside Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and 8 are within SEZs. Prominent projects include:

Outside SEZs

  1. Kampong Chhnang Solar Power Station Project: This project involves building a 60-megawatt (MW) solar power station in Prey Chrov village, Kbal Teuk commune, Teuk Phos district, Kampong Chhnank province. The investment is estimated to be over US$65 million and is expected to create 35 jobs.
  2. Preah Sihanouk Element Recycling Factory Project: This project focuses on the construction of a factory for recycling elements in Ta Nei village, Ta Nei commune, Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanouk province. The investment capital is around US$26 million, and the project is expected to generate 229 jobs.
  3. Preah Sihanouk Pipe Factory Project: This project entails building a pipe factory in O Tracheak Chet village, Rong commune, Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanouk province. The investment capital is anticipated to be over US$16 million, and the project is expected to create 229 jobs.

Inside SEZs

Within SEZs, a significant project is the establishment of an aluminium processing plant in the Jiangsu Special Economic Zone, with an investment of US$25 million, creating 684 jobs.

In May, the industrial sector attracted nearly US$181 million, while infrastructure and other sectors garnered just over US$65 million.
